Jason Voorhees’ Hockey Mask

If there is one thing that defines slasher horror icon Jason Voorhees, it’s his hockey mask. Jason’s mask combines the hulking menace of Frankenstein’s monster, the ruthlessness of every infamous slasher, and a peculiar sense of pathos given his tragic backstory. His hockey mask has been his defining feature for years and has become an essential piece of his terrifying visage. But did you know that Jason’s hockey mask wasn’t always a hockey mask? In fact, he was wearing a plain burlap sack over his head in the first two Friday the 13th films.

But after a bad line change led to him being kicked in the head, Jason found that he had to cover his face up. That’s when he adopted the hockey mask that would stick with him for the rest of his life. From that point on, he was never seen without it. He wore it to remember the pain that that bad line change caused him, and to never trust anyone again.

Jason’s first hockey mask was a Fibrosport style Detroit Red Wings goaltender mask that one of the 3D supervisors owned. It was used in Parts 2 and 3. After Shelley Finkelstein’s bloody departure from the film, Jason got an upgrade to a white goalie mask molded off of Gilles Gratton, a New York Rangers player, that he stole from his date. This mask was much wider, had an ovoid shape, and featured a crack above the left eye hole from an axe wound that Jason received from Christine Higgins in the previous movie.

After the success of this mask, several companies began molding their own versions of the Jason hockey mask for fans to purchase. The most popular version of the mask was the metallic mask that Jason wore in the 2009 reboot. This version of the mask was a reimagining of the Fibrosport style Detroit Red Wings goaltender’s mask. It was shaped differently and had the same axe crack from Part 3 in it, but had a darker shade of paint and a thicker nose.

In the 2010 sequel, Jason was upgraded to an even more high-tech mask modeled after one that was being developed for the NHL. The mask was designed by the same company that makes ice hockey helmets for professional players, and is able to see through its own mesh and can adjust its fit to each individual player’s head. It also has a voice feature that allows the wearer to speak in the character’s voice.
