Hockey is a sport that has spawned more than its fair share of legendary players. But it has also given birth to a legendary hairstyle: the hockey mullet. This is a long, untidy hairstyle that’s usually paired with a beard and capped with a hockey helmet. It’s a style that can make you look like a professional hockey player—even if you’re just a fan!
While it’s hard to pinpoint the exact origin of the hockey mullet, the style definitely started to take off in the 1970s. Back then, most men had longer hair, and the hockey mullet was the perfect way to showcase that long hair. Plus, it allowed players to show off their swagger on the ice without worrying about stray hairs flying in their face or getting caught in their goalie’s mask.
One of the most notable players to rock a hockey mullet was Jaromir Jagr, a Czechoslovakian right-winger who played for nine NHL teams and several foreign squads. He’s considered to be one of the greatest players in NHL history, with two Stanley Cups, two World Championships and an Olympic gold medal to his name. But he’s probably best known for his iconic flow, which was thick and black and practically resembled a lion’s mane.
Other great hockey players to pull off the hockey mullet include Wayne Gretzky, the Great One, who won eight consecutive scoring titles during his 20-year career and retired with 61 NHL records to his name. And then there’s Wendel Clark, whose thick, rat-tail-looking mullet is probably the most unique in the game’s history.
Despite its reputation for sloppiness, the hockey mullet is actually quite stylish and versatile. It pairs well with a number of different haircuts, including the classic slick-back and the modern quiff. It can even be styled with a fade or a hard part. Just be sure to keep it trimmed so that the front of the hair isn’t too long and that the sides are neatly tapered or shaved.
