The Los Angeles Kings are an American professional ice hockey team that currently compete in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Kings play their home games at the Staples Center, which is located in downtown Los Angeles.

The Kings have been a part of the NHL since their inception as an expansion franchise in 1967. In their early years, the Kings struggled with poor management and a lack of a strong local fan base. However, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Kings began to make waves on the national hockey scene. The acquisition of superstar player Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers in 1988 marked a turning point for the team, as well as the entire sport of hockey in Los Angeles. Gretzky, alongside fellow Hall of Fame members Luc Robitaille and Rob Blake, led the Kings to the franchise’s sole division title in 1990-91 and their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1993, which they lost to the Montreal Canadiens.

Following the end of the Gretzky era, the Kings would fall into a period of mediocrity, missing the playoffs for many seasons. However, the Kings were able to restock their roster with some quality players through the draft, including future Norris Trophy winner Drew Doughty and Vezina Trophy winner Jonathan Quick. In addition, the Kings would eventually add star forwards Jeff Carter and Justin Williams to their team. The Kings became a playoff contender once again and would eventually win their first Stanley Cup in 2012, defeating the New Jersey Devils.

The following season, the Kings surpassed expectations and won their second Stanley Cup in 2014, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets in six games. The team also won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player in the playoffs, awarded to the most outstanding offensive player.

In 2022, the Kings reached the playoffs for the fourth straight year, but were defeated in the first round by the Edmonton Oilers. During the offseason, the Kings made some key moves to improve their team, adding forwards Phillip Danault and Viktor Arvidsson, as well as defenseman Alexander Ekholm. The Kings re-signed veteran forward Dustin Brown to a four-year contract, and the team appeared poised for another deep playoff run. However, injuries to Brown and Doughty would ultimately lead to their downfall against the Oilers.
