Hockey is a fast paced sport and during hockey quarters or periods, this is where the action gets started. During these sessions, players get lots of ice time to practice, work on their speed and agility. It also gives the players an opportunity to meet and greet each other and make new friends. These training sessions are organized by a team coach.
To play hockey, the player has to be warmed up by skating on the ice. A good hockey player should always be ready to go, because in just a moment he will need to go onto the ice and play a crucial game. The player needs to be ready to face the other team’s full strength, because each player on the team has the potential to score a goal. So, when a player jumps on the ice for a change of pace, or just to get more comfortable on the ice, it is considered a practice session.
During a hockey period or quarter, a lot of the ice time that the player receives is used up playing against the other players on his team. So, every time a player goes onto the ice for a change of pace or to warm up, some ice time will be made available to him. Some players will skate as much as they can, so they only spend a small amount of time on the ice. Other players will do the opposite, so they spend almost all of their ice time playing. The coach may play one forward or defenseman and then rotate the forwards and defensemen during the regular period.
Each player on the team must learn to read the play on the ice before going out to play. They should be able to quickly figure out where their best position is on the ice, so they can be involved in the game. They must also know when it is their best opportunity to score a goal or for the team if they are on the ice at the right time. In a hockey game, it all happens at the same time. Even though different players are on different teams, they are usually playing the same type of hockey.
During a period or quarter, many players will line up along the ice, including the goaltender. The puck will go to the first player who is skating with the ball. That player will either throw the puck to one of their teammates who is close to the net or try to hit the puck with their stick. If any of the players who were skating on the ice hit the puck with their sticks, they will be considered guilty of a penalty.
For the rest of the period or the hockey game, the players will skate back to where they were originally stationed. When the playing time is over, the game will end and the teams will switch to overtime. In overtime, the last remaining player on each team will take a penalty and that player will have to play the rest of the game without the puck. That player will be allowed to skate back to the point where they were sitting in the penalty box. If no goals are scored during the overtime period, or if the game ends in a tie, the game will go into a penalty shot.
