The IIHF World Junior Championship, more commonly referred to as the World Juniors or WJC, is an annual tournament for national under-20 ice hockey teams. Held in late December and early January (beginning Boxing Day and ending on January 5), the event features some of the top under-20 players in the world and is one of the most prominent events in international ice hockey. It is also the highest profile tournament in the sport, particularly in Canada where it is often considered the main event of the yearly international calendar for younger players. This is primarily due to the success of Canadian teams in the tournament in recent years, the role of hockey in the country’s culture, as well as the strong media coverage and fan attendance it receives.

The 2024 event, which took place in Hungary’s capital city of Budapest, featured an intriguing mix of talent. Kazakhstan came into the event as the favourite, but their hopes of a gold medal were ended by Austria in the final game.

Czechia’s hopes of a comeback were reignited by goals from Jiri Kulich and Jakub Kos in the final minutes, but the home team was ultimately denied the chance to win their first ever gold medal at the event. Despite the loss, their play in the tournament has brought back a sense of hockey euphoria in the Czech Republic that had long been missing.

During the tournament we caught up with Jonas Dobnig, who shared his thoughts on playing in North America and his hopes to get recruited by a college program next season. Jonas is currently in his second year of junior hockey with the New Jersey Rockets of the USHL, a league that is widely regarded as a great stepping stone for young European players to grow and develop into the best players they can be before heading off to pursue their NHL dreams.

Adam Jiricek, D: The younger brother of Columbus Blue Jackets first-round pick David, Adam Jiricek is an A-rated prospect in NHL Central Scouting and is expected to go high in the draft this June. The defenseman is an excellent skater who can get in the open ice and has excellent vision, and he’s also been able to contribute offensively for his team.

Johannes Lokkeberg, RW: A highly skilled player with a lot of upside, the 2023 first-rounder is a key cog in Norway’s effort to be promoted into the top division at the World Juniors. He’s a dynamic scorer with elite speed and the ability to elevate pucks quickly in tight. He’s also a solid defender and a good communicator on the ice.

The International Ice Hockey Federation announced Thursday that Israel will be allowed to compete in the 2024 tournament after it was initially denied entry due to safety concerns. The federation said that it now believes there are “sufficient assurances” that the tournament will be safe for all participants and that the Israeli hockey federation has the required support to ensure the participation of the team.
